Exchiesetta is pleased to announce Alato Tumulto, a solo exhibition by Artan (Shalsi) [Berat, Albania, 1970] curated by Roberto Lacarbonara.
In one of Berat's schools, in Albania, students are taught a short yet intensely lyrical poem by Naim Frasheri, The Words of the Candle. This short poem is an important part of many Albanian kids' growth, with its simple and yet harmonious verses that they learn by heart and remember for the rest of their lives. In those verses the poet whispers the weakness of that candle light that flickers in the houses, that glows despite the slow transience of its being that burns out in sacrifice “…until nothing remains”.
Inside the Exchiesetta space, Artan (Shalsi) reproduces the archaic charm of a sacred place. The rigorous appearance of the small Romanesque building meets the vertical, austere and serial theory of a wax colonnade: five big candles hang from the nave of the building to form a line that crosses space.
With this site specific installation, the artist gives childhood a plastic shape, he reinterprets the ethical thinking and the spiritual considerations over the fate of a flame, whose vibrant and vulnerable being is at the same time a metaphor of and a warning for human destiny. Aryan places mystery and the slow consumption of sculpture substance side by side, thus connecting the essential solidity of sculpture with the quiet “winged turmoil” that, without been seen, makes life more exciting.
